Your personal data
Personal data is any element that allows a natural person to be identified directly (surname, first name, address, etc.) or indirectly (date of birth, login ID, cookie, etc.). This identification can be carried out from a single piece of data or from the cross-referencing of a set of data.
Historically, the 1978 Data Protection Act already defined personal data and the initial means of protecting it. Reworked over time and with the evolution of technological means, it now incorporates the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force at the European level on May 25, 2018.
Mediapart is committed to collecting only the information strictly necessary to provide you with quality content and manage your subscription.
When you subscribe, you are asked to provide us with an account ID that you can use to comment on articles, participate in the Club (the blog area), and interact with other subscribers or the editorial team. This ID is included in our statistical audience measurement tools. When you subscribe, in accordance with the Law for Confidence in the Digital Economy (LCEN) , your IP address is recorded at the time of your payment. When you subscribe, we also offer you the option of providing us with your date of birth and gender, which is completely optional. This information helps us better understand our readership and personalize certain communications (emails) with our subscribers.
Mediapart is a free and independent media outlet, with no subsidies, no advertising, no shareholders, and a platform that thrives solely on reader subscriptions. We do not sell any of our users’ data to third parties.
Cookies and other technologies used on Mediapart
What is a cookie?
The definition of cookies as proposed by the CNIL is as follows: “A cookie is a small file stored by a server in the terminal (computer, telephone, etc.) of a user and associated with a web domain (i.e. in the majority of cases with all the pages of the same website). This file is automatically sent back during subsequent contacts with the same domain.” You can find more information on cookies on the CNIL website .

Our mobile app works differently from our website. Cookies are only available with browsers, the software that allows you to access the web.
